SecIron vs Device-Centric Mobile Threat Defence

Looking for an alternative to device-centric mobile threat defence (MTD) tools for a customer-facing app? MTD products protect the phone. SecIron protects the app itself, on supported devices, through assessment, hardening and in-app monitoring. This page shows where the approaches differ and lists seven tests you can run on your own app.

A quick summary

Mobile threat defence tools are device-centric. They typically use a device-level agent app to detect device, network, phishing and malicious-app threats, are managed through a central console and are often distributed through an MDM. Some vendors in this category also sell a separate application protection suite for developers.

SecIron is application-centric. IronSCAN assesses the build, IronWALL hardens the compiled app, and IronSKY reports attacks from inside the app to one console. In the standard deployment, no separate app is installed on the user’s device and no device enrolment is needed, which suits consumer-facing apps in banking, payments and gaming.

If your priority is staff devices, MTD is built for that job. If your priority is an app that ships to millions of customers, compare IronSCAN, IronWALL and IronSKY with application protection products, using the tests below.

Side by side

Where they differ

SecIron compared with device-centric MTD tools as a category. Descriptions of the category are general; individual products differ.

DimensionSecIronDevice-centric MTD tools (typical)
Primary approachApplication-centric. Protection is compiled into the app and travels with it to supported devices.Device-centric. Detects threats to the device, its network and the apps installed on it.
Who it is built forTeams shipping consumer or partner apps: banks, payments, government, telcos, retail, gaming.Organisations securing corporate-owned and BYOD device fleets.
Deployment on the user’s deviceNo separate app to install in the standard deployment. Protection is compiled into the app.Typically a device-level agent, deployed standalone or through an MDM. Requirements vary by vendor and product.
Developer integrationCodeless for supported builds. Upload the compiled build, receive a hardened build. SDK optional for modules and mini apps.Usually none for device defence. Application protection products from the same vendors are separate and may use SDKs or build tools.
Pre-release assessmentIronSCAN: automated OWASP, CVE and CWE assessment with remediation guidance. Not part of device defence. Some vendors offer app scanning as a separate product.
Runtime protectionIronWALL: anti-tampering, anti-hooking, anti-debugging, root/jailbreak/emulator and overlay detection inside the app.Focused on device state and network conditions rather than hardening a specific app. Varies by vendor.
Threat visibilityIronSKY: attack telemetry by device, region, method and app, with policy-driven responses. Uses documented behavioural and device signals to help identify suspicious activity, including potentially unknown threats.A central console showing threats across managed devices.
Deployment modelCloud or on-premise options. Evaluate against your data residency requirements.Varies: shared or dedicated SaaS, private cloud or on-premise. Confirm for the products you plan to buy.
PlatformsAndroid, iOS, HarmonyOS and HarmonyOS Next; native, Flutter, React Native. Supported OS versions and frameworks vary by module; see product documentation.Typically Android and iOS. Confirm operating system and framework coverage.
Regional presenceAsia-based team and offices.Varies by vendor.

Which is right for you

Choose by the problem, not the category

SecIron is likely the stronger fit if you need to

  • Protect an app that ships to customers on devices you do not manage
  • Detect and respond to cloned and repackaged versions of your app
  • Harden compiled applications without requiring source-code modifications, subject to the supported deployment workflow
  • Support your mobile application security programme with controls that can help address relevant regulatory and risk management expectations
  • Evaluate on-premise or cloud deployment options against your data residency requirements
  • Work with a team in your time zone across Asia

A device-centric MTD tool may fit if you need to

  • Secure corporate-owned or BYOD devices through an MDM or UEM
  • Detect malicious networks, phishing and malicious apps at the device level
  • Buy device defence and app protection from one vendor

Many organisations run device defence for staff and app hardening for customer apps. Each answers a different question.

Common questions

Device defence or app protection?

Is SecIron an alternative to mobile threat defence?

They solve different problems. Mobile threat defence tools protect devices, typically staff phones. SecIron protects the application itself, so it is an alternative when your concern is a customer-facing app running on devices you do not manage. Many organisations use both.

What is the difference between device-centric and app-centric mobile security?

Device-centric tools watch the phone for threats such as malicious networks, phishing and risky apps. App-centric tools such as SecIron harden the app and detect attacks from inside it, such as tampering, hooking, cloning and overlays.

Can I use mobile threat defence and app hardening together?

Yes. Device defence answers “is this device safe?” and app hardening answers “is this app safe to run?”. Many organisations run device defence for staff devices and app hardening for the apps they ship to customers.

Does my customer need to install anything for SecIron protection?

In the standard deployment, no separate app is installed and no device enrolment is needed, because protection is compiled into your app. Confirm the details for your deployment model during evaluation.

Evaluation guide

Seven tests to run on any vendor

Ask every vendor, SecIron included, to pass these on your own app before you sign anything, and get the results in writing.

Clone test: can a repackaged copy of the protected app still run?

Decompile, modify one string, re-sign and install. A protected app should refuse to run and report the attempt.

Hooking test: does Frida attach and modify behaviour?

Try to bypass a biometric or limit check with a Frida script on a rooted device. Look for detection, response and a record in the console.

Performance test: what is the launch-time and size impact?

Measure cold start, memory and APK/IPA size before and after. The difference should be small enough that product teams do not object.

Pipeline test: can protection run unattended in CI/CD?

Trigger hardening from your pipeline with no manual step. If it needs a human in the loop, releases will drift unprotected.

Visibility test: what does the console show during the attack?

Run the clone and hooking tests, then look for them in the vendor’s console with device, location and method. If you cannot see the attack, you cannot respond to it.

Framework test: does it protect your Flutter or React Native build?

Hardening that only covers native code leaves cross-platform logic exposed. Test the actual framework you ship, and the operating systems your customers use.

Sovereignty test: can it run where your regulator requires?

If your regulator or risk team restricts where binaries and telemetry go, confirm that an on-premise or private-cloud option exists and is supported for the exact products you plan to buy.

See the difference on your own app

Talk to us and we will walk you through a comparison built around your app: what SecIron can do for you, what it cannot, and where another approach fits better. SecIron has 16 years in the category, 10,000+ apps protected and 70+ Global Fortune 500 customers (SecIron figures as of October 2026). Send us a build and, subject to scope and supported builds, we can harden it live, run the clone and hooking tests in front of you and show the results in IronSKY.
