Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on what mobile app hardening is, what SecIron protects against, which platforms we support, how it compares with other approaches and how quickly you can be live.

The basics

What hardening is, who needs it and how to begin.

What is mobile app hardening?

Mobile app hardening strengthens your application against threats such as reverse engineering, app tampering, runtime attacks and unauthorised modification. It applies multiple layers of protection to the app itself, so sensitive data and business logic stay protected even on devices you don’t control.

Why does my business need mobile app hardening?

If your mobile application stores customer data, processes payments or provides access to business services, it is a target. Hardening protects the application, reduces fraud and preserves customer trust. See our industry pages for the threats specific to your sector.

How can I get started with SecIron?

Our team will work with you to understand your security requirements, assess your mobile application and recommend the right protection strategy. Contact our experts to schedule a consultation or request a personalised demo.

What SecIron protects against

The threats we stop and how the protection is layered.

What threats can SecIron protect against?

SecIron defends mobile applications against reverse engineering, code tampering, runtime attacks, dynamic instrumentation, rooted and jailbroken devices, certificate pinning bypass and other evolving mobile security threats.

How does SecIron protect mobile applications?

SecIron delivers end-to-end protection through app hardening, runtime protection, behavioural threat detection and real-time response. The layers work together across the application lifecycle: IronSCAN assesses before release, IronWALL hardens at build and IronSKY monitors in the field.

Why should I choose SecIron over other mobile app security vendors?

SecIron uses behaviour-based threat detection to identify and respond to suspicious activity, including previously unknown (zero-day) attacks, before it compromises your application. Protection is codeless, CI/CD-ready and can be deployed in minutes, so security teams get strong coverage without disrupting development workflows.

Platforms and performance

What we support and what your users will notice.

Which platforms does SecIron support?

SecIron supports Android, iOS, HarmonyOS and HarmonyOS Next applications, including apps built with native technologies, Flutter and React Native.

SecIron also supports SDK-level protection for third-party or proprietary modules, including mini apps embedded in super apps.

Will mobile app hardening affect app performance?

Modern hardening is designed to provide strong security with minimal impact on performance. Implemented correctly, users experience little to no noticeable difference in launch time or responsiveness.

Deployment and monitoring

How fast you can be live and what you see afterwards.

How long does it take to implement SecIron?

An app can be hardened in under 10 minutes. SecIron is designed to integrate into existing development workflows, so organisations can deploy protection quickly and securely without code changes.

What monitoring and visibility capabilities does SecIron provide?

SecIron goes beyond hardening with continuous runtime monitoring and threat visibility. Security teams can see attacks across device type, geographic location, attack method and application activity, which enables faster investigation, informed decisions and proactive response.

Hardening vs other approaches

How SecIron compares with RASP, obfuscation, MDM and pen testing.

What is the difference between mobile app hardening, RASP and app shielding?

App hardening protects the app binary before release, through obfuscation, encryption and anti-tampering, so it is hard to reverse engineer or modify. RASP (runtime application self-protection) works while the app is running, detecting and blocking attacks such as debugging, hooking and rooted devices. App shielding is a vendor umbrella term that usually covers both. SecIron’s IronWALL combines build-time hardening with runtime protection in one codeless step, and IronSKY adds the monitoring layer that most shielding products stop short of. See our comparison for the detail.

Is code obfuscation enough to protect a mobile app?

No. Obfuscation makes code harder to read but does nothing once the app is running on a rooted or emulated device, where attackers hook functions, dump memory and modify behaviour at runtime. Effective protection combines obfuscation with anti-tampering, anti-debugging, environment checks and runtime detection, then monitors what happens in the field.

How is mobile app hardening different from MDM or mobile device management?

MDM secures devices your organisation owns or enrols, such as staff phones. App hardening secures the application itself on any device, including the millions of customer devices you will never control. For consumer-facing apps such as banking, payments, retail and gaming, hardening is the only control that travels with the app.

Does mobile app hardening replace penetration testing?

No, they do different jobs. A penetration test finds vulnerabilities at a point in time; hardening makes the released app resistant to attack every day it is in the field. SecIron’s IronSCAN automates the assessment step against OWASP, CVE and CWE standards before release, and IronWALL hardens the build afterwards. Most regulated customers run both.

Compliance and standards

Which frameworks SecIron maps to and how it supports audits.

Does SecIron help with OWASP MASVS and the OWASP Mobile Top 10?

Yes. IronSCAN assesses Android and iOS builds against OWASP, CVE and CWE standards and reports every finding with remediation guidance, and IronWALL’s protections map to the MASVS resilience requirements covering reverse engineering, tampering and runtime attacks. Reports can be used directly as evidence in security reviews and audits.

Does SecIron support Bank Negara Malaysia RMiT and other Asian banking regulations?

Yes. SecIron works with banks and payment providers across Asia whose mobile channel must satisfy regulators such as Bank Negara Malaysia (RMiT), the Monetary Authority of Singapore (TRM) and similar frameworks in Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Our compliance guide maps the common mobile requirements to specific controls.

Is SecIron ISO 27001 certified?

Yes. SecIron holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security management. The certificate is available from the footer of this site for vendor due diligence.

Can SecIron be deployed on-premise for data sovereignty requirements?

Yes. SecIron can be deployed on-premise or in a private cloud for organisations, such as banks and government agencies, that cannot send application binaries or telemetry outside their own environment. Cloud deployment is also available for teams that prefer it.

Integration and workflow

How SecIron fits into your build pipeline and app lifecycle.

Do developers need to change code to use SecIron?

No. IronWALL protection is codeless: you upload the compiled APK, AAB or IPA, select the protection modules and receive a hardened build. There is no SDK to wire in and no source code access required. An SDK option exists for teams that want to protect individual modules or mini apps inside a super app.

Can SecIron be integrated into a CI/CD pipeline?

Yes. Hardening can be triggered automatically from pipelines such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions or Azure DevOps, so every release build is protected without a manual step. Assessment with IronSCAN can run in the same pipeline as a release gate.

Does SecIron work with Flutter, React Native and other cross-platform frameworks?

Yes. SecIron protects apps built with native Android and iOS toolchains as well as Flutter and React Native, and supports HarmonyOS and HarmonyOS Next. Protection is applied to the compiled app, so the framework you build with does not limit what can be hardened.

Will hardening break app store submission or app updates?

No. Hardened builds are standard APK, AAB or IPA files that pass Google Play and App Store review in the normal way. Each new version is hardened as part of the release, so updates follow your existing cadence.

What happens when SecIron detects an attack on a user’s device?

You decide. Responses can range from logging the event, to warning the user, to degrading or terminating the session, and can differ by threat type. Every event is reported to IronSKY with device, location and attack details, so security teams can investigate and tune policy over time.
